In this blog, I am going to start off with: "What the heck is happening in Shibuya?" - Megumi Fushiguro, JJK. If you know the reference, fear not as I watered it down so I won't get in trouble. That said, what was going on in Phase 2 of IS101? Well let me tell you.
Phase 2 was everything and nothing all at once. It was learning something new, which was great but something in my mind was telling me not to do it since this is an unknown grounds that would get me stuck for a while. I did get stuck. Excel is a whole new beast to learn even if I am learning the basics of it. Thankfully the practice from Phase 1 took me far enough to understand how Microsoft program every app they made for 365 and my pattern recognition helped me through that. However, the formulas, the reading of every data given and boy those sweet IF statements are a headache to deal with. I have no experience in programming where the fundamentals of it are IF and THEN statements but lo and behold I pushed through. To be frank, I wanted to learn excel because every company uses it and failing to learn this course topic could set me back from my peers, which is not overall bad but Excel should be something that I should be focusing on. The A6 assignment was a pain, for me at least, since I got the wrong perspective in the reading. Although I revised it like 5 times, I still manage to complete it and learn what the passage was all about. Good read, would recommend.
Enough being frank, I am JD, who is frank anyway?
I picked Chapter 5.7.10 Challenge Lab: Use Advanced Functions in this blog post since this made me lose my mind and patience. I attempted this lab multiple times to pass and somehow I was always getting one or two mistakes. It got frustrating to the point that I have to take a walk, only to realize I can't since the assignment is due in 10 mins. Though while frustrating, the learning on the subject and the practice given was actually helpful to the point that I use it when I use Excel personally. The IS101 became a Math course for a while and I despised doing labs, but hey, at least a I pushed through.
Remember earlier I said Phase 2 was everything and nothing all at once? Well, the application part of Phase 2 outside IS101 is almost nothing. Since my current job does not require me to use Excel, I haven't been practicing it to the point that I forget the lessons that was taught to me through LabSim. Unlike, Phase 1, I still remember the lessons, Phase 2 was stress filled to the point that lessons became a blur.
Now Phase 3 has passed when I post this blog, but I got to say my mindset shifted, not in a good way. I think losing the rythm of doing lessons early, being in punctual in class and participating in every way in the course could steer a college career into ruins. What I mean is doing the best you can everyday to pass the class is something to be proud of and should not keep you down when you fail something. It happens, so don't get stuck in the mud and don't be like frank, I keep on being him lately.
That said, I am still pushing through this last weeks in class and hope to write my last blog post in a timely manner. Also, if you haven't noticed, the title of my blog posts are derived from anime titles, have fun guessing what they are! My last blog post would also have it. Man do I love easter eggs.
Hi JD, the way you described Phase 2 as “everything and nothing all at once” was probably the most accurate summary of Excel I have seen so far. One minute you think you understand the assignment, then suddenly an IF statement decides your entire existence was incorrect because of one tiny mistake hidden somewhere in the formula bar. The part about repeating A6 multiple times also felt realistic because eventually it stops becoming homework and starts becoming psychological warfare between you and Microsoft Excel. IS101 really transformed from a computer class into a side quest about surviving spreadsheets with whatever sanity we have left.
ReplyDeleteI also respect that you were honest about losing rhythm for a while because that happens more than people admit. Sometimes once you fall behind or break routine, even simple assignments start feeling ten times heavier than they actually are. Even then, you still pushed through the labs instead of giving up completely, and that says more than pretending everything was easy from the start. Also, the anime references in your titles make the blog more entertaining because reading about Excel suffering somehow becomes slightly less painful when there are hidden easter eggs involved.
Lol, the moment I read the phrase a whole JJK TikTok edit started playing in my mind. Also, I completely agree with you about Excel feeling like a whole different beast at first, especially the IF statements and advanced functions. It’s frustrating sometimes, but it’s nice seeing how you kept pushing through even after getting stuck.
ReplyDeleteHi JD. I agree that the A6: Spreadsheet Analysis with Trailer was a struggle. It required you to make the table and charts look professional.
ReplyDeleteHi JD, I love the JJK reference! The advanced functions were definitely confusing and frustrating to do, but we got it done.
ReplyDeleteThank you for finding A6 Spreadsheet Analysis with Trailer as "Good read, would recommend." ^_^
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter how many times or how long, what matters is your pushed through and reached the goal instead of giving up!
You will regain your rhythm, keep on pushing through, and finish IS101-3003/5, Spring 2026 on a high note :-)
Hi JD, I like that you became creative with your titles I do not watch anime, but my oldest son loves anime! It's also fair to say that burnout happens toward the end of the semester and it can be hard to keep up. Just remember why you started and why it's important take breaks and keep trying.
ReplyDeleteHi JD, excel can definitely feel overwhelming at first, especially with formulas and IF statements. But don’t worry, the more we practice, the easier it gets over time.
ReplyDeleteHello JD, those IF statements truly were a headache! I kept getting stumped on those in particular. The last few weeks of class can be tough but what truly matters in the end is you did the best you could.
ReplyDeleteHello JD. I had no previous experience with IF THEN problems in the past so it was hard to get used to them. I'm glad that you got through the Advanced Functions Lab, it must've felt great to finally finish it. It is difficult to push through the rest of the semester, classes with a lot of homework are a little discouraging because it seems like no matter how hard you try missing one thing can mess your grade up, even if you're doing well it doesn't feel good. I hope you'll push through and end on a good note!
ReplyDeleteHi JD, I also had little experience with excel before this class and seeing as it's the more difficult of the course. Through it all what definitely stood out was the "IF" formulas, even now I don't have the best grasp of it so I know it exactly what you mean.
ReplyDeleteHey JD, yeah "frank" is someone I can be sometimes, especially on A6, that was really frustrating for me too, but I'm glad to have conquered it. I agree, losing the rhythm can throw anyone off course and it happened to me a few times when I did a lot of the LabSims really early then forgot about it for a while, only to find out I was behind when I came back to it. I learned my lesson after that! It's good to know you're still pushing through, hope you succeed in all that you do!
ReplyDeleteThe JJK reference made me gasp, great to see a fellow JJK fan~ Anyways, your 5.7.10 experience is relatable. It was and is still challenging! But I'm sure it felt so fulfilling when you finally got to understand and finish everything. :)
ReplyDeleteHi JD, the “Excel is a whole new beast” line is honestly the perfect way to describe Phase 2. I also relate to getting stuck on one tiny mistake in LabSim over and over until it starts testing your patience.
ReplyDeleteHello JD. Your posts always get a chuckle out of me! I agree that is it important to not "get stuck in the mud." You have to be able to push through and move on!
ReplyDeleteHey JD, I felt the same a couple times but its always best to reapproach something with a clear head or different pair of eyes, I didn't know how many times I had to keep wipe, rinse repeat modules on Labsim so I could get it right with full credit.
ReplyDeleteHi JD! I like your frank joke lol!! Your whole post made me laugh, very relatable! Also I love the creativity with your blog titles!
